Is “Never Again” a Precondition?

| June 5, 2008 | Comments (1)

Yesterday, Barack Obama went before the largest Jewish political action group in the country and said this:

Let me be clear. Israel’s security is sacrosanct. It is non-negotiable.

So he says.

I wonder what changed his mind. Two days ago, one of the biggest Palestinian activists in Chicago appeared on the crazy-leftist show “Democracy Now” wondering why Obama never seemed to come around his meetings and rallys anymore. It seems that Obama was a fixture in the Palestinian community as a staunch critic of Israel and an ally of the Palestinian cause (which, by the way, includes the utter destruction of Israel). Obama has already accepted the endorsement of a socialist pro-PLO group. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to ask him from where his change of heart came.

The other thing that comes to mind is his willingness to meet with Mad Mahmoud and the Mullahs free of conditions. It seems to me that this speech completely erased his big talk about how he was going to meet with enemies such as Mad Mahmoud and the Mullahs and bridge the gaps between us. We all know that the tyrants in Tehran are unwaveringly committed to Israel’s destruction. We know that they deny that the Holocaust happened. Barack Obama, at least as of yesterday, is absolutely inflexible on just the opposite. It’s nearly impossible to see how he can reckon this speech with the promises he’s already made. It’s something he should be asked bluntly. He needs to explain himself.

Of course, he can just as easily say that his earlier “I’ll talk to tyrants without conditions” position was utter crap and that he was just using the Palestinian activist community in Chicago for the political leg-up among the more foolish leftists. It’d kill his chances in the election, sure. But it would have the benefit of being honest. Unless his position then was his real position and his speech yesterday was the fake one. We won’t know for sure until someone asks him often enough that he can’t slick his way out of giving a real answer.

The 2 notions are not at all mutually exclusive. Talking to Iran doesn't imply *agreeing with* Iran.

"the Palestinian cause (which, by the way, includes the utter destruction of Israel)"

No, that's just Hamas. There are moderate Palestinian actors and global supporters of the Palestinian cause who accept Israel's right to exist.
