Dem Honchos Say Superdelegates Must Commit This Week or…They’ll Cry or Something
I detect more than a hint of panic. Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid have gotten together to pretty much beg the superdelegates to choose between the two candidates this week and to stick to their choice in Denver.
Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, chairman of the Democratic Governors Assn., issued the brief statement for unity just minutes ago:
“The voters have spoken,” they said, adding later, “Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week, so that our party can stand united.”
My what a wonderful bit of historical revision!
First, the voters have indeed spoken and their choice is not Barack Obama. More Democrats have voted specifically for Hillary Clinton this primary season. It is only because of the arrogance of the Democratic party leadership that the situations in Florida and Michigan have been so cloudy. However, even playing through the different scenarios, Hillary Clinton bagged the popular vote by a whisker.
Second, the delegate count would not be an issue if the Democratic party has any faith in their voters. A few decades ago, the party put a mechanism in place to deliberately thwart the will of the voters, the superdelegates. That’s a fact that seems to have been completely forgotten by the MSM in their rush to crown Barack Obama Lord of All. I understand the Dem’s desire for party unity but they built the system to create exactly the opposite condition. If they want it to be different, they need to change it instead of pretending it doesn’t exist.
Then again, the modern Democratic party isn’t exactly known for being particularly democratic.
If I were a superdelegate, I’d be getting pretty ticked off at getting strongarmed into a decision before I had time to get the best possible price for my vote. I wonder how many of them are going to kick back against the pressure to conform to the will of Dean et. al. and take whatever deal HIllary’s people offer them, just out of spite.

If Hillary bows to the "Unity" machine, I will be very disappointed. I truly hate to say this but out of the four candidates running for office (Clinton, Obama, McCain, and Barr), I believe that Hillary is the best choice for our country. She's pragmatic, realistic, bull headed, and extremely smart.
What will happen is the Democratic Party will force its members to make a hasty decision. They will choose the lesser of the two candidates. Who will no doubt win the general election.
And in 2010, America will cry about how wrong the direction our country will be heading.
Almost makes me wish I were French.

Hillary was on the ballot in Michigan, but Obama was not. That would have changed your "popular vote" thesis.
