Your Sparklers are Safe, DC!
You know, just when I lose hope in the city of Washington, DC, its government goes and does something that lifts my spirits. Mayor Fenty has been seeking an emergency ban on all fireworks in the city, due to some noise complaints and the fact that the fire department gets run a lot on the Fourth of July. Thankfully, it looks like the DC City Council is going to laugh off the attempt to ram the legislation through before the fireworks stands set up.
So, my friends in the District, you will be able to wave your sparklers and set off a couple small firecrackers again this year. Incidentally, killing the emergency regulations will also save the Chinese New Year celebration since the regs would have banned the firecrackers and noisemakers that are a hallmark of the street celebrations.
Thank goodness for some common sense and people who aren’t yet willing to suck all the joy out of life in order to lock people in bureaucratically-sealed bubbles of government nannying.
