A “Duh-bama” or a Family Secret Unwittingly Dragged into the Light? (UPDATE: Auschwitz. Buchenwald. Wherever.)

| May 27, 2008 | Comments (20)

How many Duh-bamas are we going to get out of Barack’s Memorial Day appearances? Here’s the latest:

Obama also spoke about his uncle, who was part of the American brigade that helped to liberate Auschwitz. He said the family legend is that, upon returning from war, his uncle spent six months in an attic.

No, that didn’t happen. Auschwitz is in Poland. It’s on the opposite side of Germany from the American Army. Obama’s uncle might have gone there at some point, but not in an official capacity and certainly not as a liberator.

One of Ace’s guest-bloggers Purple Avenger, who provides the dates, times, and locations to prove Obama full of hooey, says that he’s lying about this. Michelle and see-dub call it another gaffe at best and another Tuzla recollection at worst. I’m not at all sure about that.

This seems more like a family legend that’s been either too good, or too bad, for Obama to question seriously. The whole “six months in the attic” thing smacks of a secret that those who know the real story don’t want anyone else, including family members, to know.

Of course, Obama has now blabbed his family fiction to the world and I’m betting it won’t take long for someone to dig up the story. I have the distinct feeling that it’s not going to be pleasant when it comes to light. It sure as heck won’t help Michelle’s kids.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign has now released a statement saying it was his great-uncle and the camp was Buchenwald, specifically one of the subcamps there. So, you know, one of those concentration camps. Who can keep track of one piddly little story of military service. It’s not like it was a “family legend” or anything. What do you think, Obama went to Harvard or something?

    Jimmie–

I thought about this possibility and it's still not excusable.

I've got some great family legends in my background and some of them are true. A few of them I've investigated are partially true, or not (I never actually had a great-grandfather who was President of the Texas Cattlemen's Association, for example, though as far as I can tell he was a cattleman in Texas.)

Before I used one of them in a speech to advance a program in a presidential campaign, I would check out the facts and make sure that, as much as is verifiable, it actually happened.

Especially if it involved something as serious as Auschwitz.

  2. Jimmie says:

I think he's probably hoping that it'll fly just like all his other little prevarications and misstatments have flown so far. I mean, a story can be so good that no one really wants to dig into it very much, right?

I'm inclined to believe that he really does believe his own hype.

  3. Jimmie says:

Simon, I'm willing to grant that you're right. It seems that Obama isn't quite sure what he's talking about at this point. Allah keeps updating the post with new information and the overall point keeps getting more and more muddy.

At best, it's a whole handful of Duh-bamas in one brief part of his speech. Like I said earlier today, he's making Dan Quayle look like Daniel Webster.

  4. Paul Atreides says:

I cannot help but think of all of the Dims who blather about President Bush's flubs as a sign of low intelligence; by that example Hillary and Barack should be wearing dunce caps.

  5. Rich says:

Obama's uncle enlisted in the Red army.

  6. suek says:

Has anyone ever seen a political "family tree" for Obama? We know a lot about his father, we know who his mother was and who his grandparents(mother's side) were, but did his mother have siblings? His mother was a communist leaning hippy – what about his family? We know his grandmother – you know, the one who was a typical white person – was pro-civil rights, to the point of being an extremist, and this may be why his mother held the beliefs she did. I'd expect that if she had siblings, they too might be of activist views…but I don't know. I don't even know if there _were_ siblings, but it would seem so. Obama's father was Kenyan, so it wasn't his uncle on his father's side. The release of Auschwitz was in – '45? – and of course, because of the location, it _wasn't_ by Obama's uncle, but did Obama even have an uncle of the appropriate age group? At the very least, Obama's uncle would have had to have been 18 in 1945, which means he would have had to have born in … 1927. Does that mesh with the family profile? He was born in '64…how old was his mother at that time? Just for kicks, say she was 25…that would have made her birth in '39. Not impossible to have one child in '27 and one in '39 certainly, but that's a bit of a span. Makes me wonder about that family tree thing…!

  7. Simon says:

As much as I hate to defend Obama, the story that Ace is relying on has a paraphrase, not a quote. I haven't seen a transcript, but another paraphrase in a WaPo blog that Allahpundit

uses to bolster Ace's claim says only that Obama claimed his uncle was "one of the first U.S. troops into Auschwitz." It may be worth getting a video or transcript to clarify matters. Measure twice, cut once, as they say…

  8. Jimmie says:

suek, I certainly don't know that much about his family. I know that there's a white side of his family of which apparently he's deeply ashamed and must resent very much (since he spent 20 years mentored by a pastor who taught him little bit hate for whitey). I know he's said that he spent time in Hawaii on food stamps while his mother earned her PhD. His father may or may not have been a Muslim. One of his grandmothers is recuperating from being run over by a bus under which her grandson flung her not that long ago.

There are a lot of folks there who seem to be existing in a Schrödinger's Cat-like superposition of states, simply waiting for Obama to oberve them to fix them in reality at any given point in time.

  9. I haven’t seen a transcript

The O-man's prepared speech doesn't match the words spoken in the video we now have up at Ace's joint. He winged it and fucked up.

  10. Jimmie says:

PA – The specific reference to Auschwitz was mentioned by two different reporters.

Then again, there's another explanation that I think has been mentioned by Allah. I's entirely possible that Obama's relative was at one of the other camps but Obama only knows the one, so that's the one he mentioned.

I bet if you asked a hundred Americans, a lot fewer than half could name more than one.

  11. STRAIGHT-TALK-LIES says:

How many times has McCain missfired….. haha …haters ……. The story was checked and confirmed.

  12. Jimmie says:

Significantly fewer than Obama has in just the past month.

Tell me again. How many states does he think there are? He had two shots and the answer and missed both times.

  13. suek says:

    >> His father may or may not have been a Muslim.>>

His father was a muslim. And so is he, by islamic precepts. Which is one of the reasons it's so interesting that there hasn't been any comment made by muslims about his being apostate. Not from the standpoint of whether he's actually Christian in his beliefs or not, but because in islam, leaving islam is grounds for death. And yet, muslims haven't said word one about his being born muslim. The dog didn't bark, so to speak.

By the way, someone has pointed out that there are 57 muslim nations.

Also by the way, apparently it was his _grand_uncle who was in the 89th division, and who was among those who went into Ohrbach, a Jewish work camp. Not one of the death camps, although apparently instead of sending them to the death chambers, they just worked them till they died. I'll give him this – since he seems not to have an uncle, the family probably just his granduncle "Uncle Whatever" so that as a child he just thought of him as an uncle. Who calls their grand uncles "Grand Uncle…"!!!

  14. Jimmie says:

suek – A thought occurred to me fairly recently. Obama's father was, for some part of his life, an observant Muslim who had two wives. Obama's admitted as much. Why, I wonder, has he not been pressed on it nearly as much as Mitt Romney was on polygamy during the Republican primary?

  15. suek says:

Because Obama converted to Christianity – it doesn't matter what his father believed. The sheep has returned to the flock. Romney is still an LDS, and there are – as we know – LDS fundamentalists who still believe in polygamy. The fact that the main LDS church came into compliance with the law that makes polygamy illegal 100 years + ago is irrelevant.

The whole thing is really irrational. Divorce is so easy today that the whole of the US effectively practices a serial polygamy. With the acceptance of gay marriage, the right of the State to regulate marriage is in question, so can polygamy be far behind? People have become sexually promiscuous and live with (or at least couple with)multiple partners whenever they wish and regulation of extramarital sex is pretty much limited to restricting prostitution…so really – what does it matter?

I don't understand it myself. I'm Catholic – one marriage for life. But if people don't have that concept, what is the purpose of marriage??? why should the government have _anything_ to do with it? What difference would it make if Romney believed in polygamy??

Actually, the bigger question that the MSM ignores is whether Obama might be a bastard or not….haven't heard _that_ question raised, have you!!!

  16. suek says:

    And … oh yeah….

Good discussion on the question at http://www.sweetness-light.com/

I don't have a link to the article at the moment, but I think it posted yesterday or the day before. If you haven't been there, take a look around – bet you'll like it…!

  17. Jimmie says:

What I was thinking there is that Mitt Romney clearly isn't a polygamist nor does he believe in it. Yet he was asked repeatedly to talk about polygamy and the Mormon Church as if he had some responsibility for it himself.

Yet Barack Obama's never been put in a similar position. It's a matter of media consistency. They have to grill Obama to be consistent with how they grilled Romney.

I don't think they should grill either one, but if you do one, you have to do both.

  18. Joe says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmci9nTuCkg

Obama's great uncle was in the NAVY.

Charles W. Payne, born 1924, enlisted 10Nov42, Navy, 6293977 Registered, order #12019, Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Board #4

  19. suek says:

I think you're mistaken, Joe. Part of the problem is that apparently there are two Charles Paynes – one with the middle initial W, one with the middle initial of T. Check out the comments on this article – folks who do genealogical research have gone to some lengths to get to the facts.
