Ted Kennedy Diagnosed with a Malignant Brain Tumor

| May 20, 2008 | Comments (8)

The news is breaking as we speak that the seizure that sent Senator Ted Kennedy to the hospital recently was caused by a malignant brain tumor. Such tumors are frequently untreatable and fatal. Even if they are not, the treatment is very, very hard on the patient.

Some of my favorite bloggers on the right – Michelle Malkin, Don Surber, and The Anchoress among many – are sending along their very best wishes and prayers for the Senator and asking those of us on the right to put aside our political differences to wish him the very best.

I’d love to be a bigger man and join them, but I can’t. I don’t feel any sympathy for him. Certainly, I’m not glad that he’s been stricken so. The news doesn’t make me happy but neither does it make me sad.

I’m sure that some will see this and deride me. Okay, fine. Have at it. I can’t find room in my heart to feel sorry for a man who left such misery and wreckage behind him in his gargantuan quest for more pleasure and power. The guy left the corpse of a young girl in his wake without suffering any real earthly justice. He’s slandered and lied his way through Congress for decades without losing a bit of adoration from his friends in the press or anyone in his party. Even today, the president calls him “my friend” which, I must say, causes me a little bit of pause.

No, I can’t find sympathy for a man like that but I certainly won’t gainsay the folks who do keep him close to their hearts tonight in prayer. God bless them, sincerely, and their wonderful big hearts. I just won’t be among them.

It is painful to me to see anybody get the slow death of cancer. My dad died that way 5 months after being diagnosed with esophegial (sp?) cancer. And a childhood friend I knew also died of brain cancer after a 10 year struggle. I can tell you….its not pretty.

That said, I understand your difficulty with feeling sympathy for someone who has done so much real damage to other people's lives. Some of it which will continue long after he's gone. But we are still supposed to pray for our enemies. Fear of death & the unknown tends to soften even the hardest of hearts.

  2. Jimmie says:

Perhaps, Lori. I'm willing to grant this is a flaw in my character, but I can't summon sympathy for him or his family.

He's not my enemy. He's just a a very, very selfish, spiteful, greedy man. I don't hate him. I don't feel anything for him or his plight.

I am very sorry for your loss. I know that cancer can be a grueling death. I hope for your continued good health and happiness in every possible regard.

  3. Lori says:

Oh trust me…I have to work at having sympathy for him also. I just meant I do it because we are supposed to pray for our enemies. He is definitely one of them so I will do just that!

I didn't read the other posts/blogs you linked to on this, so I don't know how far they went with their "wishes". I will say though I don't think it does anyone any good to whitewash someone's history or lavish praise where none is due just because they die or are about to. No reason to be dishonest….just sometimes you have to lay down your weapons. That's as far as I think it needs to go in my opinion.

Just as a side note, I hope when my time comes it is fast & completely unexpected. That is the only way to go really.

  4. Jimmie says:

I know, Lori, I know. I just can't bring myself to do it. I'm very glad there are folks like you who can, though.

  5. Jewells says:

Jimmie, no flaming from me sweetie. I agree with you. I certainly don't wish him any ill will, but I cannot summon up any sympathy for him either.

  6. spoots says:

You're not a very good Christian, I daresay.

  7. Jimmie says:

Your judgement, spoots, does not hold a great amount of weight with me.
