“I love the whole world. It’s such a brilliant place.”

Thanks to The Anchoress (via Dr. Sanity), my favorite television commercial, bar none. I even sing along with as much of the lyrics as I know.

My favorite parts? Adam setting Jamie’s's arm on fire (and the look Jamie gives) followed closely by Stephen Hawking saying “Boom-de-adda”.

It’s a nifty take on an old kids’ song that I first remember hearing as a round when I was a Cub Scout. The lyrics, as I remember them, are:

I love the flowers, I love the daffodils
I love the mountains, I love the rolling hills.
I love the fireside when all the lights are low.
Boom-dee-ah-da. Boom-dee-ah-da.
Boom-dee-ah-da .Boom-dee-ah-da.

What is my least-favorite commercial, you ask? Well, there’s a tie and unfortunately, both of them get plenty of airplay on the stations I generally watch (History, Discovery, Sci-Fi, and Spike). Hop below the jump for the commercial carnage.

This commercial makes no sense at all. There’s no reason for the lizards to be dancing. There’s no reason for the lizards to have bling or a grill. There’s no reason for the woman to be dancing. She’s not even doing the same dance as the lizards, who are doing a passable facsimile of parts of the dance from the original “Thriller” video. She can’t even get the scary claw arms thing right at the end. She’s nothing but a hot woman in a short skirt and she doesn’t even do that particularly well. She can’t command your attention because you’re trying to figure out what the hell the lizards are doing.

Okay. Stop. Just stop. Animals that need care are indeed sad, but the song is just way too sad and way too human for dogs and cats. Sarah McLaughlin doesn’t make me want to adopt an animal. She makes me want to go on a rampage against all angsty piano-singers including, but not limited to: Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, Ben Folds, and that new woman singer whose songs I can’t freaking avoid because they’re everywhere.

  1. The Anchoress says:

I wondered if I was a bad person for wanting to shake Sarah McLaughlin…I like her, and I like dogs and cats…but somehow…I don't like them TOGETHER.

  2. Jimmie says:

I'd certainly not condemn you. I'd probably help you!

I love that Life Water commercial. I can't figure out why you are being so picky about it. Do you know how commercials don't pass muster if you take out talking/dancing animals? And how realistic are two astronauts floating out in space (with no space ship in site) looking at the earth singing a song?

I can't take the last one though….I leave the room when it comes on because that one will make me cry for a half hour. How did they find so many one-eye'd dogs & cats?

  4. Jimmie says:

Lori, it's not that there are dancing lizards, it's that what they are doing doesn't make any sense to me. Add to that the one human who isn't doing quite the same dance as everyone else, and it's just confusing.

I didn't even know what product was being advertised until the third or fourth time I had seen the commercial.

  5. Rob says:

Ugh, that lizard commercial is horrible! So, if I drink the flavored water I turn into a zombie lizard that dances like Michael Jackson? I just keep on hoping that the female dancer steps on one of the lizards. That would be funny…

She is doing the right dance – go watch the original Thriller video on YouTube. She's just trying to do it more sexy I guess, seeing how she's not dressed up like a ghoul or a lizard.

They are selling water, which is pretty boring even with flavoring. So it makes sense that they were trying to be as entertaining as possible; so maybe you wouldn't notice that its just water?? Or maybe trying to show that their water makes you want to dance? Or brings you back to life (back from the dead)? I don't know, LOL….I still like the commercial.

  7. Jimmie says:

Lori, I think you're being too generous to the lady. Her scary claw move is really, really bad as scary claw dance moves go. Even the lizards do it better.

Maybe you shouldn't keep this water around if there's a chance you might get a lizard in your house. Otherwise, your jewelry will disappear and you'll have a dancing lizard!
