Despite Being “Unpopular”, We’re Still Picking Up Allies
Chalk up another win for freedom and civilization, and for the forward-thinking diplomacy of our President. This time, it’s Serbia – yeah, that Serbia – which has elected a pro-West, anti-Putin coalition to run its government. If we’re not careful, we’re going to see a Europe that’s more pro-American then I can remember.
Michelle Malkin’s site, thanks to a great post from see-dubya (who I privately refer to as The Blogger of Whom I’m Most Jealous), has the whole story.
The new President, Boris Tadic, is going to need our help right away. The opposition, including Serbians miffed that Kosov is independent and former genocidal monster Slobodan Milosevic’s Socialist party are contemplating an alliance that will press Tadic’s Coalition for a European Serbia very hard. A good word from the President and some immediate recognition from Secretary of State Rice would go a long way toward cementing their victory.
Back to see-dubya’s post. He says something there that I think is really important:
We’re justifiably focused on the events of the day, especially the great war we’re involved in and our upcoming election. But there are a thousand little things like this going on all over the world every week that barely get discussed. (Dozens of them flash across my monitor every day, and usually their significance is yet too obscure for a blog post or I just don’t know enough to say anything useful.*)
Some things, though, you hear about and think, that matters. Granted, there’s a human temptation to see patterns in these events where there may be none, but I agree with Publius Pundit’s Kim Ziegfield that this is another important little pixel in an encouraging picture of the world turning away from Soviet tyranny…
Serbia may be a small place, but every little chip we can carve out of Vladimir Putin’s growing return to totalitarianism is important. We need to strangle tyranny before it gets a chance to grow strong. Serbia’s vote just tightened the free world’s fingers a little bit tighter.
