NC Repubs to John McCain: You’re Not the Boss of Me!

| April 25, 2008 | Comments (3)

Just when I think I’m warming to John McCain, he does something that makes me think “Oh, just bite me, you preening jackass”. Today would be one of those days. Johnny Mac has decided to get real tough on, well, let’s see if you can guess.

Barack Obama? No
Hillary Clinton? No
The Democratic Party? No
The North Carolina Republican Party? Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

He’s all fired up because the North Carolina Republicans dared to make a campaign ad without consulting him, apparently. The disputed ad, which is about as beanbag as an ad gets without actually using puppies and daisies, doesn’t address the presidential race, was made for a North Carolina audience and addresses the North Carolina gubernatorial election.

So what business is it of his? It’s not. The ad is none of John McCain’s stinking business. Of course this is John “Campaign Reform” McCain we’re talking about. He has the habit of thinking that all campaign speech must be run through him directly, so he can make sure that we’re all living up to his standards of civility. Oh, and not criticizing any incumbents. Can’t forget that part.

Yesterday, he was just a mealy-mouthed busybody. Today, he’s gone all the way to full-bore jerk.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican U.S. presidential candidate John McCain accused North Carolina’s Republican Party of being “out of touch with reality” over its refusal to pull an advertisement criticizing Democrat Barack Obama.

In an NBC interview aired on Friday, the Arizona senator said he has done all he can to persuade the state party to cancel the television ad that criticizes Obama as “too extreme” because of controversial remarks made by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

“They’re not listening to me because they’re out of touch with reality and the Republican Party. We are the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan and this kind of campaigning is unacceptable,” McCain told NBC’s “Today” Show.

No, John. They’re “not listening to you” because you have absolutely no authority to give them orders. You’re a poltical candidate, not a king. But while you’re making these petulant pronouncements, maybe you can tell us what “this kind of campaigning” is. I’m a little hazy on the source of your outrage.

Here’s the ad. Tell me what’s misleading, incorrect, or dirty about it?

This is not out of line. In fact, it’s pretty much a textbook local campaign ad run during a national election. I’ve been seeing these ads since I was a kid and they pretty much bore me. But they do work, mostly because they’re true and they’re easy to digest.

McCain is overreacting. Badly. He needs to put his nose back into joint, sit down, and enjoy a nice, fresh cup of “it’s not your freaking business what sort of ads a state political party runs in a state election”. What’s he going to do next, ban more free speech because he finds it “unacceptable”?

He did it once. Don’t put it past him to do it again.

Fortunately, the NC Republicans aren’t backing down, contrary to previous reports. Michelle Malkin has dug out the scoop on that and reports that the Republicans in Tarheel Land are going to run the ad no matter what Johnny Mac has to say about it. Good for them. Be sure to check back at Michelle’s place for updates on the story. She’s been on top of it from the get-go.

I'm still firmly in the scorched earth camp. McCain is such a bad candidate for this party, he is actually making Hillary look good to me.

  2. suek says:

I understand your position, Lori. Just keep thinking "Supreme Court Justices"…

There are about 3 of them, I think, who have been hanging on just to see a Democrat elected…!

I couldn't vote for Hillary – she's a socialist. But if the SC choices weren't so critical, I could definitely stay home.

I know suek – I keep hearing that argument as well but I sure don't see any evidence that McCain will do any better than Hillary in this department either. To do so would require him to stop insulting his own party (whom he hates) for a minute and play hardball with the democrats (who he loves) for confirmations. I'm pretty sure he won't go to the mat for even a very moderate justice who has extremely good potential of turning lefty once appointed. If he appoints anyone who has ever held a right-leaning position on any issue, the Dems in congress and the press will be wailing…and in order to pacify them, he will withdraw the nomination because it is the "bi-partisan" thing to do. And remember, bi-partisanship to John McCain means always agreeing with the left while making your own party eat the excrement sandwich.
