Let’s Go Caps Go!
If you’re a hockey fan even a little bit, you have to admire what the Washington Capitals, my hometown team, have done this year. They were, at one point in the season, the worst in the league. Halfway through the season, they were dead last in their division. Then, the owner gambled on a coach with no NHL experience but loads of years of minor league work behind him and a love for the game, and the charge began. The team ended with season by winning 12 out of 13 games, the division title, and the third seed in the playoffs.
Tonight, they rallied from two goals down in the third period to win the first game in their opening playoff series against the hated Philadelphia Flyers, 5-4. The game-winning goal was scored, fittingly, by their humble superstar Alexander Ovechkin (arguably the most exciting player in the game today). Mike Green scored two and the Verizon Center was rocking like it hasn’t rocked for a hockey team since…ever.
This series is going to be fun to watch. The Flyers have great players, too, and they’re not inclined to simply roll over and die.
