Go Craig Go!
Recently sworn-in U.S. citizen Craig Ferguson is being embraced by his new countrymen: The late-night comic hit a ratings milestone last week with his first victory over NBC’s Conan O’Brien.
The CBS “Late Late Show” averaged more viewers than O’Brien’s “Late Night” (1.88 million to 1.77 million) for the first week during which they each competed with all-original shows since Ferguson started in January 2005.
I’ve been finding myself tuning into Ferguson’s show more often when I’m up later at night because he is one of the best things going on television, not just in its time slot but in any time slot. Of course his time slot has a lot to do with what makes his show good. If he had Leno or Letterman’s slot, the show would be a lot more glitzy and would be able to take fewer chances because the networks simply wouldn’t allow Ferguson to do what he’s done. That’s just how the networks operate. He couldn’t be the goofy, self-deprecating, moderately out of control host that he is during prime time, or in the very best talk show slots. The suits would drain his humor and he’d end up like David Letterman who, these days, is about as funny as a dead cactus.
And it’s cool that he’s a brand new citizen. I’ve had the opinion for a little while now that he very much loves his new country and is immensely proud of it and the folks who live here. His affection for America just kind of bleeds through when he talks. And he doesn’t suffer fools lightly.

I always switch over to watch the beginning of his show….he is very funny. I don't even bother with the other late shows…in my opinion, Craig is the funniest of all of them.
The guy really is funny. I think part of what I find funny is that he seems a pretty uncomplicated guy who just likes making other folks laugh. It doesn't seem like a crafted image to me.
