The Primaries are Hill-arious!
I have to admit, I’m thoroughly enjoying the moron slap fight that is the Democratic primary season. I’ve seen the very best of progressive politics: vicitim politics, promises of lavish public spending, a solid half-dozen calls for a new New Deal, race-baiting, gender-baiting, class warfare, and the occasional desultory blow swung toward some fictional Republican policy or other.
Robert McCain’s been keeping some kind of track and has a bit of a rundown, including a surprise appearance by George McGovern. You might remember McGovern from such Democratic disasters as the 1968 election from which the wonderfully elitist superdelegates were born. He’s musing about the whole “she’s a woman and he’s a black guy, what oh what do we do now?” problem the Democrats have as, to borrow from Obama buddy in good standing Jeremiah Wright, the identity politics chickens have come home…to roost.
Years from now, I suspect that Democrats will look at the 2008 election cycle much in the way that we now look back on our old photos from the 1970s. There’s going to be an awful lot of head-scratching and “What on Earth we were thinking?”.
UPDATE: Howard Dean enters the fray as…the calming voice of reason?!
Hey, why not. Anything’s possible this year.
