‘Twas that Rascally Republican Hillary that Started It All
Sometimes you can be looking so hard for gants that you miss the elephant right in front of you. That’s exactly what Paul Waldman, writing for The American Prospect did. His point is, basically, that Republicans are a bunch of racists who have been waiting for the go-ahead to pile opn the black man.
For months, I’ve been predicting that conservatives would delicately prompt voters to see Barack Obama through the lens of race. They’d drop hints, they’d make roundabout arguments, they’d find a hundred subtle ways to encourage people to vote their prejudices, while denying vociferously that they were doing anything of the sort.
It turns out I was wrong. Not about whether they’d try to exploit racial prejudice (that was about as easy to predict as the rising of the sun), but about how they would do it. After some hesitation and baby steps, the conservative campaign against Barack Obama has finally begun. And there’s nothing subtle about it.
The funniest thing about his article, aside from the fact that he has to stretch quotes worse than Mama Cass in a wrestling singlet to get them to even remotely fit his point, is that conservatives didn’t begin this so-called attack.
Hillary Clinton’s campaign did that. They were the ones pushing the Jeremiah Wright story. Conservatives only got involved when they saw ample examples that yes, indeed, Barak Obama was cozied up nice and close to a rabid racist, anti-Semitic, hater of America and everything she’s ever stood for.
This little point of history is completely lost on Waldman, who gives me the distinct impression that he’s had this column warmed up and ready to go since sometime in 2004. All he needed was the name of a black candidate and some random quotes from Republican strategists that mentioned the candidate’s name to plug into the right places. Bingo! InstaColumn!
Kind of like painting by numbers, only with 100 percent more tendentiousness.
