McCain Burnishes His Maverick Medal Once More
Johnny Mac is never so eloquent as when he’s quoting the left’s favorite criticism about President Bush’s foreign policy.
John McCain, outlining his foreign policy positions on the heels of an overseas trip, is renewing his call for the United States to work more collegially with democratic nations and live up to its duties as a world leader.
“Our great power does not mean we can do whatever we want whenever we want, nor should we assume we have all the wisdom and knowledge necessary to succeed,” the Republican said in prepared remarks a few days after returning from the Middle East and Europe. “We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies.”
What actual evidence does John McCain or anyone else have that we ahve been doing “whatever we want whenever we want”? No one can show me a scintilla of proof that we have not listened to our allies and respected their will.
I’m really tired of this old saw. There is a mountain of evidence, starting with UN Resolution 1441, and moving on through six years of working with our allies closely, to refute this ignorant statement. I’m sorry that John McCain feels he has to pander to the left by parroting this stale and completely wrong criticism of President Bush.
If he’s going to be a real leader, he’s going to have to do a lot better. He won’t win my vote by showing me that when it comes to national security, he doesn’t sound much different than Hillary Clinton or John Kerry.

Just 4 short years ago, Zell Miller said in his speech at the Republican convention that John Kerry would only use force if approved by the UN…..and the crowd boo'd loudly. Then he said "Kerry would let Paris decide when America needs defending" …..more loud boo's. Then he said "I want Bush to decide" and the crowd went nuts.
I don't think John McCain knows enough about what makes a conservative tick in order to even fake it a little. Yet he's been trying to convince conservatives that no one has been more supportive of Bush's foreign policy than he has. Which, may play well among the part-time political watchers but I have thought all along that he spent the last 8 years trying to undermine Bush's decisions out of spite.
….oh joy, he is on TV right now giving a speech on foreign policy…..ugh!
I think it's silly for anyone to say that John McCain's a conservative, Lori. Clearly, he's not.
The question we should have been asking, from the very beginning of this election cycle, was not who is conservative. I think we should have been asking who will carry the largest number of conservative values farther down the field. If we had, McCain wouldn't be the nominee right now.
Damn, and I was just started to warm to him a little bit.
I'll still vote for him though. You really don't want the alternative.
I dunno. I could maybe stand Hillary Clinton for a while. I lived through Jimmy Carter in my youth!
Did you see his whole thing about the League of Democracies? Yeah. What this world needs is another world organization to ignore. That'll work!
I'll vote for McCain about the time I let Dracula give me a blood test. A league of democracies to include the likes of Mexico, Zimbabwe and the PRC? I think not.
