China Cracks Down Harder. So Where Are George Bush and John McCain?

| March 20, 2008 | Comments (12)

The Chinese crackdown in Tibet continues while protests move into surrounding provinces.

China sent additional troops into restive areas and made more arrests in the Tibetan capital Lhasa in an effort to suppress anti-government protests even as the Dalai Lama offered face-to-face negotiations with Chinese leaders.

Government officials acknowledged for the first time that the sometimes violent protests against Chinese rule of Tibet have spread to Tibetan communities in other provinces after sweeping through Lhasa last week.

Hundreds of paramilitary police aboard at least 80 trucks traveled along the main road winding through the mountains into southeastern Tibet. Others set up camp and patrolled in riot gear, helmets and, for a few, rifles in the area above Tiger Leaping Gorge, a tourist attraction that usually sees little unrest.

Even though the Chinese government is using the most heavyhanded techniques, the word is spreading: the government is vulnerable right now, more than it has ever been, to pressure from both inside and out. The Olympics are coming and the tyrants in Beijing can’t afford a huge embarassment. Tibetans and other freedom-minded Chinese are putting their lives on the line to buck the repression and reach out for help. We ought to be there to give it to them in every way possible.

President Bush, are you paying attention? John McCain, are you there? You say you love freedom and you believe that it is a human’s natural bequest from God. Well, get on the stick, guys. Lets have a few more public statements. Let’s talk about the Olympics right out in public where the ChiComs and their goons here in America can hear. Be bold, as conservatives should be. If the Chicoms accuse you of meddling in their affairs, meddle harder. After all, they have their own secret police right here in America intimidating those who speak out against them. Call them out and embrass them. Make them uneasy. Make them unsure of their footing. Panic them into another domestic mistake.

You know that the Obammessiah won’t be very bold on this issue. He can barely stomach that we freed a few million Iraqis and Afghans. Hillary won’t be terribly bold about China either since she’s gotten quite a bit of money from the Chinese over the years.

    Los Angeles, 1992

    Second day (Thursday, April 30)

…The California National Guard, which had been advised not to expect civil disturbance, responded quickly by calling up some 2,000 soldiers…

    Third day (Friday, May 1)

…That morning, at 1:00 a.m., California Governor Pete Wilson had requested federal assistance, but it would not be ready until Saturday. State guard units (doubled to 4,000 troops), continued to move into the city in Humvees. Additionally, a varied contingent of 1,700 federal law-enforcement officers from different agencies began to arrive, to protect federal facilities and assist local police….

    Fourth day (Saturday, May 2)

…On the fourth day, 4,000 soldiers and marines arrived from Fort Ord and Camp Pendleton to suppress the crowds and restore order…

Please, although apparently you like the Tibetan rioters much more because they ask for the glamorous "freedom and democracy" western fundamentalism that ugly "snow mountain" banners. The Han Chinese, Hui Muslim Chinese, and Tibetan civilians are also HUMAN BEINGS. Some of them have been beaten or burned to death, many of them lost their home and business. Please, show some respect! Please see what the tourists said if you don't believe me.

As a Chinese, I don't like my government at all, and I also don't like this Olympics because it wasted too much money on this unnecessary event. But this time, I feel truly disgusting on the arrogance, ignorance and hypocrisy of western world!

  2. Jimmie says:

And I, Lei, feel sorry that you can not see the difference between the riots in California during which several people were killed by rioters and millions of dollars of property destroyed and the riots in Tibet escalated by the Chinese government during which several Tibetans were killed by the Chinese government.

I feel very sorry for you indeed.

  3. susan says:

I'm also SORRY for that you are misled by the western media. If you were in Tibet, maybe you have been killed by the rioters.you didn't see the violence made by these rioters, so you don't know the real situation at all. 13 innocent persons have been killed by them and a great many of people were injured by their violence. so many houses were burned and destroyed!you know that? Don't be unjust to the Chinese Government. And learn to be objective in treating these affairs and don't be cheated by your own goverment and the media in your country!

  4. Jimmie says:

Susan – I will never learn to be objective toward tyrants. Perhaps if more people were not, fewer would exist.

  5. susan says:

Jemmie, now I know why Bush can start the invasion to Iraq. it's because he got the support from the ignorant and arrogant Americans just like you.it proves that you were wrong! In China, people never think they are dominated by "tyrant".in fact, they enjoy the current peaceful and happy life very much ! they are all thankful to the government which is leading the nation to become strong and powerful enough to say "no" to the western hegemonism, esp. the U.S. If you know Chinese(language), go to the CHinese WEB to see what the common people say about the Tibetant rioters. there's a Chinese saying to you: Don't be a frog in the well!

  6. Jimmie says:

susan, I'm sure they do. Well, except for all the people who have spoken out and are in prison now, or dead, for doing so.

I bet you're also glad your Mother wasn't one of the millions of Chnese women forced into abortions when she learned she was pregnant with you, a female. I'm also glad you feel so free to speak out against the American government here. If you spoke out against the Chinese government there, you'd be brutalized and imprisoned for a couple decades.

  7. susan says:

The WHITE HOUSE and president Bush is really tyrant! a hypocrite! it's strange that you don't know that! CHEETing people with the propoganda of so-called freedom! there's freedom of Americans to invade other countries and slaughter their peope! you really don't know the people in these countries hating you too much? but pitifully they are not as powerful as the U.S. and so they cannot invade your country! Don't you know that Your human rights are based on trampling on that of other peoples! I dare say, IF YOU CONTINUE being like this, and One day, if some are bold enough to attack you, the rest of the word would burst out acclaims!

  8. susan says:

by the way, I have been living in China for More than 20 years! I am sure you make wrong judgement to this country. Please come to China and make clear the truth and then you have the right to comment on it!

  9. Jimmie says:

I appreciate your invitation, susan. Unfortunately I must decline. See, were I to visit China, I could not attend the church of my choice nor read the Bible of my choice.

Say what you will about the United States, but we enjoy greater freedom here than any other country in the world. I'm sorry if that doesn't appeal to you.

  10. fostert says:

"Say what you will about the United States, but we enjoy greater freedom here than any other country in the world"

Having traveled to many other countries in the world. I'd take issue with at statement. We're about on Australia's level when it comes to freedom, and below New Zealand and most of Europe. Yes, we are more free than China, but that's not saying much,is it? And in the conservatives' most valued freedom, the freedom to pollute, China is actually way ahead of us. Of course, we're way ahead of most of the industrialized world in the freedom to pollute. Although some of us think that the freedom to pollute should actually be curtailed.

As for the rioters, their behavior has been appalling. And I say that as someone who supports Tibetan independence and has many Tibetan friends, all of whom have been made refugees by China's actions. His Holiness is right to criticize the violence of the Tibetans. The Tibetans deserve better treatment from China, but burning down Han businesses is not the answer. This is especially true given that the Han haven't exactly been treated well by the government either.

  11. susan says:

About 325 people (not including the policemen)were injured in the violence in Lhasa last Friday, while damage estimates climbed to more than 200 million yuan ($28 million), according the latest count by the Tibetan regional government.

The losses include 100 million yuan suffered by shops, 9.05 million in financial services and the rest in damages done to government buildings, the latest tally suggested.

The eruption of violence damaged 422 shops, six hospitals, seven schools and 120 civilian residences. Eighty-four vehicles were torched.

Thirteen civilians were burned or stabbed to death. (3.21)

And today more five victims' corpses were found, including a five-month-old baby and her parents, they are all burnt to death by the rioters. the scene is too tragic to look at. we can see only some pieces of burnt arms and legs of them remained. anyone who sees this can't keep their tears. the brutality of the rioters makes us terrible!

I just wander whether the media like CNN give these reports? they just exaggerate the troops in Tibet, but do not report what the troops do there is to help the injured. it is just they have prejudice about the government of China.

It's true taht there exist all kinds of problems in China. but it is in the path of developing. Transformed directly from feudlism, it's young and has to learn from other developed countries to better itself, but it needs time, because it has to support the biggest population. for the cultural reason, the reality makes maintaining its stability the most important, or else 1.3 billion people would have a much worse life, suffering from poverty, diseases caused by poverty and unrests, etc. and so we must see its progress and those who have prejudice about this country really need reflect their simple-minded actions.

  12. Lei says:

Thanks, Susan and fostert, thank you for seeing things from your own eyes, not through CNN or BBC.

20 or 15 years ago, I was a fan of VOA when I was still a teenager, however,

the hard reality, especially after I stayed 6 years abroad in US and Europe, which changed my view toward most western media dramatically. Actually, when something happened in China, I can well anticipate how they will react and what they will report.

    to Jimmie,

What happened in Lahsa IS very similar to what happened in LA. In fact, the deeper reason for the riot: (let me say something maybe politically incorrect), some Tibetans are so used to the life receiving money from the government, and then donate most of them to monks. At the meanwhile, some of them are jealous to the hard working Han or Hui Chinese businessman but they won't do anything themselves.

By the way, some of my friends and classmates in China are Christians, I am pretty sure you can read the bible of your choice, though as a matter of fact, maybe you cannot find a church of your choice, if you mean a America methodist branch or Evangelical branch. However, you can find the localized version of the churches. But after all, do these small differences in Churches and Bibles really matter to you?
