Thirteen Percent Isn’t All That Much, Considering.
A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC Poll shows that 13 percent of registered voters believe that Barack Obama is Muslim.
Is that a problem? If you take that number in isolation, it may be. If you compare it to other relatively recent polls, it doesn’t look like a very big deal at all. Plenty of Americans believe things that are flat-out nuts.
Consider that 56 percent of Americans believe that UFOs are real and 48 percent believe that UFO have visited Earth. Twenty-two percent of Americans believe that George Bush knew about the 9/11 attacks in advance. Thirty-nine percent believe that the “Israel lobby” was a “key factor” on the President and Congress on toppling Saddam Hussein. About twenty percent believe that the Sun revolves around the Earth. And 58 percent believe that George Bush misled America to go into Iraq.
Even if you’re a big Barack Obama fan, you’re going to find that far more Americans believe things you’d likely find completely bonkers. For instance, Forty-eight percent of Americans believe the literal, Biblical account of creation (including 34 percent who are college graduates). In 2003, 70 percent believed there was a direct link between Saddam Hussein and the 9/11 attacks. More recently, a majority of Americans believe that we will ultimately be successful in Iraq.
I don’t think this 13 percent is such a big deal. There is always a segment of America who believe what they believe and there’s no convincing them otherwise. I think that number usually sits around the 15-20 percent range. That only 13 percent believe that a guy whose middle name is Hussein and whose father was Muslim is a Muslim himself is a testament to how well he’s established that he’s not.
Now if he could only be so convincing about the racist moron he’s treated like a spiritual father figure for a good part of his life. Were I the Obamessiah, I’d be a lot more concerned that a man he embraced as his spiritual shepherd was a vicious and wicked man than I would that a few Americans think he’s Muslim.

I'd have to agree with that. Good post.
Well, at least this identifies 13% of the American public who happen to be dumb as a post and proud of it.

Well, he _is_ muslim. His father was muslim, which makes(or at least made) him muslim. He says he's Christian, and has been for at least 20 years. Ok…I have no reason to disbelieve him, but he needs to deal with the fact that he was born muslim. Lots of children reject the religion of their parents – I have no problem with that – but muslims do. In this time of war, given the stated objective of militant islamics, I find it very odd that his relationship to islam is just simply off the table when it comes to discussion.
Maybe it's irrelevant to him – I haven't read his book – maybe this is something he's discussed before and explained. If so, I haven't heard it. But why is it something we're not "allowed" to discuss or comment about?
