Zimbawe is Dying and It’s All The Racists’ Fault. Right?
Europe’s favorite leftist dictator Robert Mugabe has finally figured out who’s to blame for the rampant starvation and disease that is killing his country.
Nope, it not his fault. It’s the fault of “the dark forces of imperialism” and the “hate programme by Britain and her fellow racists”. A real shocker, huh?
The rest of us who aren’t living in Delusional Dictator Land might remember that Zimbabwe was once a relatively prosperous African nation that only started its dizzying descent into squalor and misery in 2005, when Mugabe’s government wrested farmland from white farmers and lent it to black peasants. The land remains the property of the government and the new residents, who know next to nothing about farming, have failed miserably in their new jobs. As a result, the nation’s food output has dropped to nearly nothing. Zimbabwe is now fully reliant on imports and charity for its food. Without that, the country will simply die.
The World Food Programme is one of the largest charity groups trying to keep the country alive. Unfortunately, it can’t even manage a bit of truthfulness on what is killing Zimbabwe.
The World Food Programme says 45% of Zimbabweans are suffering chronic malnourishment because of “poor agricultural policies and a declining economy”. The WFP feeds about 2.5 million people and other agencies are providing food to about 1 million. But large numbers of people are surviving on far fewer calories than they need, leaving them vulnerable to illnesses, particularly the large proportion of the population with HIV at risk of developing full-blown Aids.
Well, “poor agricultural policies and a declining economy” is certainly one way of putting it. A better way would be that Zimbabwe is dying because of “a leftist tyrant who lives in luxury while his people die slowly because of his stupid socialist policies”. I suppose that would be too blunt for a group that’s only trying to help. It’d be nice to hear a group like this be blunt though, wouldn’t it? Perhaps if we started peaking plainly about the stupid brutal selfishness of people like Robert Mugabe, we’d start seeing less of them
