The Democrats’ Convention Pickle and A Couple Lies to Boot.
I’m finding the Democrats’ contortions over Florida and Michigan to be one of the funniest thing I’ve seen in politics in quite a while. The newest wrinkle is that Howard Dean, head of the DNC, has said that the two states can actually have their votes count so long as they come up with something that fits the rules already in place that they pay for themselves.
Of course, that’s not likely at all to happen.
Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton and the NAACP are blaming the whole thing on the Evil Republicans in Florida. According to them, it was the Republicans who forced the poor Florida Democrats into having an early primary which forced them to break the DNC’s rules which then disenfranchised two whole states.
Except that’s not quite what happened.
It’s true that the Republicans in the Florida legislature voted to move up the primary. They most likely did it knowing full well that the DNC had decided on the “screw you” rule instead of the more forgiving rule the Republicans had put into place for their primaries. Wait…you didn’t hear about that? Yeah, because they voted early, Florida and Michigan will only send half their normal delegates to the Republican convention. They’re not whining about it because the RNC decided that they could punish rule breakers without being draconian. They’ve taken a hit, but they don’t have two whole states’ worth of disenfranchised voters.
But, the DNC made their bed and the Republicans in Florida, being minimally-competent politicians made darned sure to tuck the covers up nice and tight. Now, Florida Democrats did have an option. They could have opted to hold a caucus instead of a primary like plenty of other states. There weren’t any rules in place stopping them from doing that, which would have kept them well within the DNC’s rules. Then, they could have called our the Republicans for their mean politics like they always do and it might have had some validity. But they didn’t and it’s entirely their fault. They had a way out and didn’t take it. Now they’re stuck.
Boo hoo hoo, I say.
Hillary Clinton and the NAACP are being significantly less than honest on this. The MSM seems to be content to let them get away with it. I do not feel as generous.
