Ed Morrissey over at his tony new digs highlights a USA Today Op-Ed that asks the question: “Democrats promise a lot, but who will pay the bill?”

Isn’t this the same question we always ask about Democrats?

The editorial says that both Clinton and Obama have proposed about a bazillion dollars of brand-new spending and have promised us everything except a shiny new pony for everyone. Of course, when you ask them how they’ll pay for it you get exactly the same answers we’ve gotten for my entire voting life: raise taxes on the rich and raise taxes on the rich. Oh, and then we’ll raise taxes on the rich, too.

Of course what they don’t say is that the rich usually don’t provide a stationary target. So when the government does come ’round the old Money Bin, Scrooge McDuck has already fond a whole lot of nice places to put his money where the government can’t touch it. That puts our Democratic Santa Clauses in a bit of a bind. They’ve promised us all ponies, but now they don’t have any money for ponies.

So they have to choose: do they not give us ponies and blame it all on those selfish rich people who, for all we know, are eating pony stakes and throwing brand new ponies in the trash; or do they look for ways to simply take the money from the rich people on the grounds that it’s just really uncool that we all can’t have the ponies they promised.

My bet is on both.
