Obama, the Fascist
Conservatives are often accused of wanting to “turn back the clock” but I don’t think you’ll want to find one that wants to turn it back to the good old fascist 1920′s though.
Michelle Obama is another story entirely.
Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation and that you move out of your comfort zone. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual – uninvolved, uninformed – you have to stay at the seat at the table of democracy with a man like Barack Obama not just on Tuesday but in a year from now, in four years from now, in eights years from now, you will have to be engaged.
Jim Geraghty is his usual mild self in response. Ace says it a lot better and more succinctly. Allahpundit says that Ms. Obamessiah makes George Bush look like a piker in the executive power expansion department.
Somewhere tonight, Jonah Goldberg has got to be thinking that his book could not have been released at a better time. It seems like the Obamas are singlehandedly trying to prove his thesis in just a couple months.
What do I think? Well, there will always be a certain segment of the left that’s just fine living in a fascist state so long as they’re in control. They’ve successfully managed it a couple times while most of America was distracted by other things. That’s generally how the left gets their most egregious bilge in place. It’s up to the rest of us to squash this pernicious and un-American mindset before it takes root well enough to seriously threaten any of us. When the wife of the leading Democratic candidate starts saying stuff that you could have pulled from speeches by Benito Mussolini or Adolf Hitler circa late-1920s, it’s time to take them seriously enough to squash their totalitarian hopes as hard as possible. We’ve done this before. We should never do it again.

Really? Have I been alive during one of these fascist episodes? I don't really remember. I remember Nixon, but even he wasn't a fascist. Paranoid, lawbreaking, warmongering fool, yes. But not a fascist. Even the current president wouldn't be a fascist, despite his agreement with Mussolini that business interests should control the government. Where's the fascism?
Wilson would have qualified. So would Roosevelt. Heck, they both had their own group of thugs. And both of them were much admired by the OF himself, Benito. In FDR's case, the admiration was mutual.
And actually, you have the business/government relationship backwards. Government controls the businesses in fascism, per Mussolini's own words. It doesn't own them, but guides them into producing for the good of the state.
Jimmie is right about this one. Wilson had people put in prison for speaking out against WWI. FDR filled the Supreme Court with justices that would allow for his unconstitutional acts. Some would argue FDR was the worst president we have ever had. Though he was loved by the people because he bribed the voters by spending money on projects to employ people. This a kind of round about way of bribing people. Sorry about being a little off topic but I could not help interjecting my 2-cents worth.
I recall reading an instance of a tailor put in prison by the FDR administration for undercharging people for his work. he was charging them 35 cents when the law said he had to charge them 40.
What is Fascism? how can it be confused with hitler when Benito Mussolini had no choice but let hitler in. Naxizism was a seperated socialistic Party that was never accepted by the Italians. Fascism is diametrically opposed to leftism. In a true fascist state, all leftists would be severely oppressed and quaking in fear, fleeing, or dead. How would liberals be happy with that? Nonsensical.

Fascism is autocratic and tyrannical. What part of "sitting at the table of democracy" is fascist? Unless the table is really a waterboard, I guess.
As an aside, another commenter said that Wilson was fascist. Wilson was not a Democrat in the modern sense, nor do I like the guy. His favorite movie was Birth of a Nation. Modern Democrats didn't start coming about 'til FDR's New Deal, and FDR was a mixed bag. Way over-rated AND over-hated.
Historically, you're incorrect about fascism's relation to the left. FDR was quite the fan of Il Duce's way of doing things.
