Two Trains, One Track

trainwreck-edited.jpgAre the Democrats’ “identity politics” chickens about to come home to roost? From the looks of the race so far, it sure as heck looks like it. We have two competing narratives that are about to run head-first into each other at just under supersonic speeds – the Women for Hillary versus the Blacks for Obama – and there may not be room in Denver to contain the wreckage.

It’s gotten so bad that the superdelegates hardly know which oppressed minority to back and the candidates are spinning all sorts of interesting little rationales to justify why their oppressed minority group should get preference now. Interestingly enough, the party faithful have forgotten that their superdelegates do not exist to represent the will of the people. They are there specifically to temper the irrational emotions of the voters and to give the party establishment a firm lock on the party’s nominee.

Tom Maguire is doing yeoman’s work keeping track of both trains as they hurtle toward what should be a most entertaining debacle in just a few months.

It couldn’t happen to a nicer party.
