I’ll admit when I saw the headline to this story, my thought was, “Hmmm…75 percent of Baghdad is secure? Not too shabby”.
Not too shabby indeed. A year ago, according to the article the amount of Baghdad that was secure was 8 percent.
Before General Petraeus’ surge strategy: 8 percent.
After General Petraeus’ surge strategy: 75 percent.
More, including an invitation to Democrats, after the jump.
I’m inviting my Democrat friends to come over to the winning side now. Come on, guys. We’re beating the tar out of al-Qaeda. Iraqis who, 13 months ago lived with little hope now are welcoming their neighbors home, regardless of their sectarian affiliation. The Iraqi parliament, emboldened by our wilingness to stay and do the hard work on their behalf has passed the first of what is likely to be several reconciliation laws. The son of the main Shi’ite political group has called publicly for the government to help Sunnis come back “home” and take their place in the governance of the nation.
Our common enemy isn’t done yet by any means. Lets do everything we can to help Iraq become a stable, prosperous, and free nation and demonstrate that liberty is the strong horse. The Islamists gambled nearly everything on getting us to turn tail and run in Iraq. We nearly did thanks largely to a President who was slow to see the problems that existed and a contingent of people in this country who used every setback to advance their own political ambition.
But the President has at least found a general who will fight the war the way it must be fought. And the power-mongers change their arguments nearly every day to turn every triumph into a deficiency. What’s worth remembering is that those folks are not our friends nor your allies. They don’t know you and they don’t care about you. They want your vote and nothing else from you. After November, they will drop you like a hot potato. Bet on it. Better to walk away now than before they break your political heart.
So come on and share a smile with us for the Iraqis who are slowly but confidently reclaiming their country.

Why would I come to the winning side of an unlawful and immoral war? It just encourages the bastards.
I ask you to review the definition of “cease-fire” and revise your use of the word “unlawful”.
And perhaps you could share a little joy in the freedom being enjoyed by a few million Iraqis while you’re at it. I mean, if you can lay aside the concern for American politics for a little while. You are being used. I’m just trying to help you realize it sooner rather than later.
No matter how you “spin”, the war in Iraq was and still is an illegal invasion by an outside force intent on occupying a sovereign nation with a natural resource that the invading power needs desperately. You ask me to “come over to the winning side”. What “winning side”? What will ever justify the slaughter of thousands and thousands of innocent Iraqi men, women and children just so a pampered prick like yourself can scratch yourself and feel glad about it all? If you had any common sense or even a minimal amount of moral courage, you would see that America has accomplished nothing, absolutely nothing, by our invasion and occupation of Iraq–except that craven and cowardly elitists like yourself can now crow about “victory”. There is and never will be any “victory” in Iraq.
mike – I give you exactly the same advice I gave the first commentor. I’m afraid that the propaganda you’ve received is lacking a certain truthfulness.
