Mitt Romney takes Michigan in what looks like it’s going to be a bit of a romp. The early-ish returns (25 percent or so in) have him up by ten points on John McCain who campaigned his guts out (to steal Coach Gibbs’ signature post-game phrase).

According to Fox, Romney won handily in all the demographics they tracked – men and women, college and non-college, old and young – you name it, Romney won it. He even stomped all over McCain’s speech to take his victory lap. That, folks, is what a winner looks like. I think better of Romney for showing a little alpha dog tonight.

So, that has to make Romney the unquestioned front-runner right now. He’s won two primaries and finished second in two. He’s out in front of the delegate count. There is no clear second place at this point, which means that this race is still entirely up in the air. And we’re heading to South Carolina where Fred Thompson is drawing revival meeting-like crowds and is shoving his way quickly up the early polls.

How will it all play out? If anyone can tell you they know for sure, they’re lying to you. Right now, four candidates absolutely must finish in first or second place, something any of them could do. I don’t expect any candidate to drop out, but a third place finish could cripple any of the campaigns badly.

It ought to be fun to watch, oughtn’t it?

One Response to “Mitt “Romp”ney!”

I’m sorry, I was to busy seeing the real world to see your response to my last snarky comment on this. I guess you actually take seriously the Wyoming Convention. That election gives you about the momentum of a bug hitting you in the back of the head. But let’s face it, Romney recently won in a state with a lot of Mormons and where his father was a three-term governor. He’s still the front walker. But he ain’t walkin’ too well.

As for Thompson, wake me up when he can break into double digits. He has all the momentum of Dennis Kucinich, but slighlty more than Rudi. I’d stick a fork in him, but there’s too many in my way. He’s so dead, he doesn’t even know it. The only thing he’s got a chance at is to come in second place in the “Hottest Wife” contest. And even that’s in question.
