Let the Gulf Have Her? Maybe It’s Time to Cut New Orleans Loose

| January 14, 2008 | Comments (10)

Gerard Vanderleun has had enough of New Orleans and her greedy, ungrateful occupants. I can’t say that I have a huge problem with anything he said. At some point we have to stop helping people who won’t help themselves and who demand – demand?!? – that we give them more and more and more.

Sorry, New Orleans. I’m tapped out. We can get our jazz from Chicago or Memphis or Kansas City or New York or Washington, DC or California. I have a couple good beignet recipes and making a good seafood gumbo isn’t all that tough, especially when you live in Maryland. You had a good run. You wrote some good stories. But we’re just tired of dragging you around and it’s probably time to stop. You’ll either walk on your own from here on out or you won’t.

Wow- he said everything I have always felt! Sadly, we will keep pouring more money into this hellhole.

Most of those who support pouring more and more into New Orleans are also among those who are most concerned about global warming. Those who are concerned about global warming predict that the oceans will rise about 3 ft over the next hundred years. Assuming you believe that in fact the oceans _will_ rise – even half of that – does it really make sense to rebuild a city that is already below the present sea level?

I really don't understand how some people think…!

  3. Jimmie says:

suek – I don't subscribe to that particular belief. I think what sea rise we see will be much less than the most dire predictions.

That said, there are alternatives. I'm just tired of pouring money into a city that clearly is abusing our generosity.

New Orleanians will be MORE than grateful as soon as we see some of this government teat help arrive. Until then we will just keep rebuilding our city with the help from volunteers from all over the world. Keep living in your comfortable bubble world. We don't have the luxury.

  5. Jimmie says:

I suggest you look to your Mayor and your former Governor for the answers?

If you live with corruption for most of your born days, you're not allwoed to cry when the corrupt run off with the money you let them steal. Ask William Jefferson about that next time he comes down for a town meeting.

    Jimmie,

I looked to the man I voted for -George Bush. I did not vote for Nagin or Blanco. Blanco is gone and Nagin will be gone. I am telling you as an eye witness, YOUR government is inept and as full of cronyism as I have EVER seen in a lifetime of Louisiana politics. Ignore that at your peril.

  7. Jimmie says:

Perhaps, but that administration is over in less than a year. It'll have a few decades to catch up to the legendary corruption.

Seriously. Clean house and we'll talk money.

  8. doctorj2u says:

    Again Jimmie,

Eye witness. This government has FAILED the citizens of the Gulf South. I am a conservative that voted for Bush twice. There are two things I WILL NOT tolerate. 1.)Turning your back on fellow Americans in need 2.)Lying. This administratin has done both and I personally will not rest until they are out of office.

  9. Jimmie says:

Here's where you and I differ. I don't believe it's within the government's property authority to help "Americans in need". That's my job. That's your job. When the government does it – every time the government does it – it wastes our money.

You're going to have to help me here with how the government lied about New Orleans.

  10. doctorj2u says:

I have done my job. I have helped in 3 towns in 2 differebt states. Now I want MY government to do ITS job – protect its citizens. Give us the levees they told us we had but did not. Because of their negligence a million people were displaced and hundreds of thousands homes and businesses were destroyed. If they can't do it, let us keep our federal taxes (38% of my yearly income) so we can protect ourselves.
