Barack Obama is being endorsed by fellow Sen. John Kerry, the Democrats’ 2004 presidential nominee who lost to George W. Bush that year with John Edwards as his running mate and gave up his own plans for a 2008 run a year ago.

Wow…in one fell swoop John Kerry drops in on two of the three viable Democratic campaigns like the payload from an orbital mass driver. First, he endorses Obama, which has got to be like Ichiro getting a fanny-pat from Mario Mendoza for his batting technique. Then he doesn’t endorse the guy he picked as his running life-mate just three years ago which tells you just how highly he regards John Edwards and his shiny, silky mane.

Dig the lede, too. Endorsing Obama is a slap at Hillary? A slap? He couldn’t have helped her more had he shown up in New Hampshire and rigged a few dozen voting machines. Apparently, the AP reporter thinks that John Kerry is still a valuable commodity in national Democratic politics. I guess he didn’t pay a lot of attention to the election in 2004 where a whole lot of folks didn’t care who John Kerry was just as long as he wasn’t George Bush.

He really should have given Obama and Edwards a little warning. They could have at least assembled an all-star cast of character actors to fly up there and plant an atomic bomb inside his endorsement so it’d land in manageable chunks instead of the campaign-killing size. Surely Ben Affleck’s not busy.
