Romney Leading the Pack…For Today
As of tonight, the leader on the Republican side of the Presidential race is Mitt Romney.
Forget national polls. Forget Iowa. Romney’s the leader because he’s the one who, today in Wyoming, won actual delegates. As of now, he has nine of the state’s 14 delegates (normally, Wyoming would have 28 but the national party penalized them for moving their primary). Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter have picked up one apiece and there are a few more still up for grabs.
So, where it really counts, Mitt Romney’s ahead. Tomorrow will change things and South Carolina will change things even more. But it’s worth remembering, in the blizzard of punditry of the next several weeks and months, that what matters is the delegate count. That, and nothing else, is what elects a nominee.
