You Think They Would Have Noticed the Pork, But No.

The Politico notes that Ron Paul’s supporters “aren’t afraid to open up their wallets to aid the Texas congressman’s long-shot presidential bid”.

Indeed, but you’d think that in an article that praised Paul’s propensity for voting “no” on tons of legislation, it would mention that Paul couldn’t manage to say no to packaging up $400 million worth of pork for his home district in a bill he knew without a doubt would pass. Ron Paul may not like free trade with our neighbors, and sending back campaign donation from bigots, but he sure does like having you pay for shrimp farming in Texas.

Oh, but according to him, it’s not pork. They’re “tax credits” because the people in his district deserve to get “some” of their federal tax money back. Apparently, the biggest tax payers in his district are the shrimp farmers because that’s where most of his “tax credits” went. Not that any of that found a way into the article, because Paul is one of those maverick Republicans whose strongest words aren’t against the big government but in favor of international isolation and against our successes in Iraq.

Paul’s supporters certainly aren’t afraid to open up their wallets. Apparently, they aren’t afraid of a good helping of cynical political maneuvering and rank hypocrisy either. Nor is the Politico afraid to to do a little free campaigning for him.
