Damned If You’re A Jew. Damned If You’re Not.
Has loathing for Israel really gotten so commonplace that even allegedly well-educated people can throw their brains out the window before they write about Jews? I can’t imagine how else to explain this award-winning paper written by an Israeli doctoral student. It says that the Israeli army didn’t rape Palestinian women not because they’re trained very well or because their culture looks upon rape as one of the very worst sins a human being can commit but because Israeli soldiers don’t see Palestinian women as human beings worthy of being raped. Further, it says that the non-rape of Palestinian women is every bit as damaging and dehumanizing to them as raping them would be.
In other words, it a bad thing that the Israelis aren’t raping Palestinians. But it’s an equally bad thing if they were to rape them. Thus, the Israelis are bad no matter what they do. The paper’s author has them coming and going. And if you should criticize the paper? Well, don’t bother. You can’t. The author said so.
Gurevitch [the head of the committee that gave the author the award] said that observers do not have the right to demand a particular explanation to a given phenomenon. He said that the researcher had done a serious job, based on interviews with 25 soldiers and other accounts, and that the right-wing should not jump to the conclusion that this was simply another “secular, left-wing” generality.
Oy, vey.
