Self-Deprecating Humor Now Considered Too Offensive for Public Consumption in Britain. (UPDATE: A Contest in the Comments!)

Okay, so here’s the setup. There’s a quarterly magazine in Britain that gets distributed to a certain area’s psychiatric facilities and walk-in clinics. The magazine prints a cheeky little list called “Christmas Carols for the Mentally Disturbed”. One person, who objects to the jokes and to being caleld “disturbed” gets (ahem!) disturbed and complains. Council who runs the psychiatric program in the area agrees to trash the magazine and invite the disturbed non-disturbed lady in to meet the people who run the magazine and came up with the list.

Pretty straightfoward, right? Heh…read on after the jump for the punchline.

As it happens, the magazine is “..put together by an editorial board made up of patients”. In other words, the jokes that so disturbed the whiny lady were written by a group of psychiatric patients just like her.

So, at least in Salford, England, it is not just making fun of other people that is forbidden; it is making fun of yourself that’s off-limits.

I suggest that the whiny patient perhaps try some stronger medications – ones that restore her sense of humor.

Oh, here is the list in question. Some of them are pretty darned funny!

UPDATE: Prompted by Ames in the comments, how’s about we have ourselves a contest? Let’s write a few more Christmas Carol titles for the “disturbed”. Sounds like fun.

How about: "Silent Night… because I'm the only one here." (Depression)

That's a good one, Ames. How about a little contest?
