While some folks whinge about why athiests were left out of Mitt Romney’s speech about religion and America*, other people are truly suffering for their beliefs in a supposed free Britain.
The daughter of a British imam is living under police protection after receiving death threats from her father for converting to Christianity.
The 31-year-old, whose father is the leader of a mosque in Lancashire, has moved house an astonishing 45 times after relatives pledged to hunt her down and kill her.
One may suppose that her entire family is composed of those elusive moderate Muslims about which Ayaan Hirsi Ali writes today. Ali, a former Muslim who was hounded out of two different countries for daring to speak critically of Islam and other such dastardly acts as going out in public with more than a couple square inches of her skin uncovered and being in the presence of men without one of her relatives nearby to kill her if she acted like anything but chattel, has been looking for those hundreds of millions of moderate Muslims but doesn’t seem to find all that many. I tend to side with her. The more I look, the more evidence I see that the larger Muslim world isn’t as moderate as its apologists say it is. At some point, we need some substantial evidence of moderation pushing back against the Islamists.
Nevertheless, the brave British woman reminds us of just what we’re losing.
Last night the woman said: “I’m determined to live my life the way I want to because I should have that freedom in this country.
“If you make the choice to come to this country, as my parents did from Pakistan, you have to abide by the laws of this country and that means respecting the freedoms of other people.
In many so-called free nations, that’s only true unless you are Muslim. If you are willing to threaten murder, and occasionally stick a knife into an infidel’s chest to make your point, you can get a whole country to make a few exceptions for you. We’re not doing that here in America yet, but we are so very close.
