Gilbert Arenas, NBA Superstar and Decent Man
With the Washington Wizards opener right around the corner, Mike Wise wrote a very good article about All-Star point guard Gilbert Arenas that I think you’ll like. Arenas did not have an easy life by any stretch, but thanks to his father and some good folks around him, he’s become a good man, although not a perfect one by any means.
The NBA has rightly gotten a reputation of late for being a league that glorifies thuggery and the me-first attitude that’s poisoning our society. Arenas seems to be a one-man antidote for that – a guy who plays basketball because he loves to play and because he can use it to reach for heights he might not otherwise attain. He openly accepts that being a high-profile professional athlete makes him a role model and he takes the time to give back to the community that has come to accept and appreciate him. This far, he’s done pretty well professionally and personally. As you’ll read, he’s not a perfect man, but he’s a pretty good one and that’s a good thing.
