When Digging for the Angle Matters More than the Facts
Well, the news of how Rush Limbaugh turned the tables on some political weasels and made a cool few million for a worthwhile charity his the news today and, as you might expect, at least two MSM outlets decided to flog for the Democrats. Several bloggers such as Don Surber, Macranger, Warner Todd Huston, and Gaius have taken one or the other alleged news organizations to the woodshed, and rightly so.
While they’re dealing with the chuckle-inducing bias of the MSM, I wanted to give ABC a good whack for not even getting the facts of the story right. The details follow after the jump.
In its report, ABC says:
All proceeds from the auction of the letter will go to the Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation, which distributes aid to the families to the children of fallen Marines on behalf of law enforcement officers.
Umm…no. If ABC had simply followed the link it rather sloppily gave, it would have found that the Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation doesn’t distribute aid on the behalf of law enforcement officers. It distributes aid to the families of Federal law enforcement officers, just like it does to families of Marines.
Indeed, had they simply visited the home page instead of plumbing the depths of the political contributions given by auction winner Betty Casey, a subject on which they spent three paragraphs, they would have found that the MC-LEF also has launched programs to help children of far more than just the USMC and Federal law enforcement agencies.
What that tells me is, based on the entire story, the reporter was far more interested in finding out if Betty Casey was a staunch Republican than it was in finding out even the basic mission of the charity that will receive over 4 million dollars.
It seems par for the course that the basic facts of the story played second-fiddle to the political angle. Accuracy in the media doesn’t seem to be particularly important these days, so long as the right narrative is being pushed.
