All We Need to Do Is Hire 700,000 More Diplomats!

Yesterday, in a speech at Brigham Young University, Harry Reid uncorked a line that ought to get a good bit more MSM attention than it will.

I say the invasion of Iraq was the worst foreign policy blunder in our country’s history,” he said, to loud applause from many in attendance. “I say our diplomatic army should be larger than our military army.”

According to this Brookings Institute paper, there are about 7,500 Foreign Service Officers currently working overseas. According to the Department of Defense, as of June 2007, we had approximately 1.4 million active-duty soldiers.

So, in order to comply with Harry Reid’s wishes, we would at best have to decrease our military by about 50 percent while increasing our FSO contingent about 9400 percent.

Yeah…700,000 more diplomats is going to make us safer. Because, you know, diplomacy has always had a sterling track record dealing with Islamists.

Remember, folks, this guy wants his party to win the White House next year. Can you really afford such a lightweight to stay in a position of authority for a few more years?
