So, It’s Now “Sunni Insurgents”, Is It?
Here’s the headline in today’s New York Times:
I wonder who those “Sunni insurgents” could be? President Bush has been contending rather strongly that we’re fighting al-Qaeda, even though the media and Congressional Democrats say he’s full of beans. It seems the Times can’t manage to really name the “insurgents” until they get to the fourt paragraph when they admit that it’s really al-Qaeda after all.
Well, kind of. They call the group “al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia” and describe it as “a homegrown extremist group whose leadership has foreign ties”. Now, we know, thanks to folks like Michael Yon, Michael Totten, and even the Times’ own John Burns, that we’re not facing some DIY terrorist project group in Iraq. We who have read more than the filtered, biased, narrative-driven pap that gatekeepers like the Times have been spoonfeeding us for five years know that these “Sunni insurgents” are al-Qaeda through and through.
Unfortunately, most Americans have not and so we have this story that misleads and refuses to tell us who is really killing Iraqis. This story’s purpose isn’t to inform but to propagandize on the behalf of those who want us to believe the President a liar when he says that we’re fighting al-Qaeda. It’s a sneaky and craven attempt to chop a few more points of the President’s approval rating at the expense of the Iraqis who are dying every day to make their country a place where their kids can grow up free and in control of their own destinies. Mostly, it’s just pathetic trickery from a newspaper that can barely manage to get the big stories right these days.
