It’s Only Racist if You’re on the Right

Former Republican Congressman J.C. Watts, among others is making a big deal about several GOP frontrunners who won’t be going to the Tavis Smiley-hosted debate in Baltimore this week. The standing narrative is that the candidates who won’t be at the debate are doing so because they don’t want to speak to black people and they don’t care about black issues.

I find it interesting that this angle of the story is getting so much attention considering that nearly every candidate pulled out of a recent Fox News debate. Fox ended up canceling the debate even though it had been in the works for quite a while. Now, folks like Senators Clinton, Obama, and Edwards said that Fox was so biased that any debate there would be patently unfair.

What wasn’t reported, though, is that Fox wasn’t the only ones putting on that debate. They were sharing the hosting job with the Congressional Black Caucus. Now, I’ve yet to hear how the Democratic candidates were dissing black issues by throwing their Congressional comrades to the curb even though that’s exactly what they did. There weren’t a flurry of stories about how the Democratic front-runners were borderline racists for not showing up at a debate co-hosted by such an influential group of black lawmakers. In fact, I doubt very seriously that the CBC was mentioned much at all in any story about that debate. I wonder why the MSM managed to miss that angle and find the ones involving Republicans.
