Mad Mahmoud at Columbia: The World Reacts
Here are some headlines from leading newspapers around the world on Mad Mahmoud’s shameful visit to Columbia University. The translation from other languages are my own rough approximations. I’ll welcome any more accurate corrections.
The Guardian (UK): Leader Denies Iran Nuclear Ambitions
The Times (UK): US threats are the real danger to peace, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad tells New York
The Telegraph (UK): US Students Boo Ahmadinejad
BBC: Iranian President in Campus Clash
Agence France Presse: Ahmadinejad suffers rare public dressing down on US visit
Le Monde: Le programme nucléaire iranien est pacifique, répète Ahmadinejad (Basically, Ahmadinejad insists Iran’s Nuclear Program is Peaceful.)
Der Spiegel: AUFTRITT AN NEW YORKER UNI / Scharfe Attacken auf Ahmadinedschad (Roughly: Appearance at a New York University / Sharp Attacks on Ahmadinejad).
International Herald-Tribune: Ahmadinejad, at Columbia, parries and puzzles
Canada.com: Iranian Leader Gets Hostile Welcome
CBC: Ahmadinejad called ‘cruel and petty dictator’ in NYC school visit
Toronto Star: Ahmadinejad Gets Rough Reception in New York
Globe and Mail: Ahmadinejad Gets Rough Reception
Obviously, Bollinger’s scathing comments aren’t getting the lion’s share of this story. In fact, only one headline actually mentions anything specific about Bollinger’s speech. Most of them, as I predicted, simply call his appearance “rough” or say he faced “criticism”. Many of them don’t refer to it at all.
Here’s how the Iranian people are seeing his visit today:
FARS News Agency: Ahmadinejad: Iranians Insistent on Attaining National Interests
IRNA: IRI President addresses students at Colombia University
So much for Lee Bollinger making Mad Mahmoud look foolish. It sure appears like the world press is playing the story pretty generically (“Oh ho hum. Ahmadinejad got criticized in the US”) or are subtly painting him as a victim of raucous Americans.
Nice job President Bollinger, you knucklehead. Thanks for giving the little twit some great headlines.
