Anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr took his Mahdi Army out of action for up to six months Wednesday to overhaul the feared Shiite militia — a stunning move that underscores the growing struggles against breakaway factions with suspected ties to Iran.
A spokesman for al-Sadr said the order also means the Mahdi Army would suspend attacks against U.S. and other coalition forces.
Mookie has been one of Iran’s top proxies in their war against Iraq and America. That he’s standing down means that either he needs time to pull together his army, which has been getting hammered during the surge, or that Iran needs some breathing room and wants him out of the public eye for a while.
In either case, we should not give him the opportunity he wants. Our forces need to zero in on him and his Mahdi Army and destroy it utterly. Just because he’s ordered a cease-fire doesn’t mean that we should. Indeed, we’d be idiots if we let him rest and recuperate. Now is the time to shatter Iran’s proxy and send a message that they are no longer worthy of fear.
And it wouldn’t make me sad at all if Mookie found himself getting shot full of holes really soon either.
