Alberto Gonzalez has packed it in as Attorney General.
I can’t say that I’m getting worked up about it. Gonzalez was far from my favorite person in the administration and I think history will put him right in the bland middle of the pack of Attorneys General. He wasn’t great. He wasn’t incompetent. He pretty much did what the President wanted him to do, which is why he was drawing a paycheck in the first place. The stuff about the US Attorneys was, and remains, complete nonsense and will end up being a huge black mark against the Democratic Congress for yet again trying to overreach its Constitutional authority. The immigration battle will go firmly against Gonzalez, since he decided to labrogate his responsibilities to enforce the law. In all, though, his tenure as AG will probably end up being an undistinguished wash in the history books kept alive mostly because of partisan bickering than any real historical value.
Call it a firm “satisfactory performance with great room for improvement” on his exit evaluation.
UPDATE: Memeorandum has about a ton and a half of reaction from the blogs. Oddly enough, there aren’t a lot of folks who are sad to see him go. The left is elated and now want him tortured on television or something like that so they can grab their jars of cooking oil and their special latex friend. The right is kind of bored of seeing the guy and wishes he had gone long before today.
