A Major Bridge Collapse in Minneapolis

| August 1, 2007 | Comments (0)

This is a nearly unbelievable story.

The Interstate 35W bridge that spans the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed during Wednesday evening’s rush hour, sending dozens of cars plummeting into the water and crashing along the banks and roadways below.

Right now, there are six dead, several dozen injured, and about 20 people missing. part of the bridge came down on land. Most of it collapsed into the river, which is why there are so many missing. According to the reports I’ve read, the bridge simply collapsed without warning. KCCO-TV has posted unedited video from its helicopter that overflew the scene. It is surreal to see an immense section of the bridge simply not where it belongs.

Minneapolis is not a very big city; a disaster on this scale is going to hit the city harder than it would a larger metropolis. Many will need our prayers and whatever support we can give them.

Ed Morrisey is a Minneapolis local, as is James Lileks. Check back with them for details and updates.
