A Fitting Salute, Ironman to Ironman

This is a priceless gesture, I think.

Baltimore Orioles umpire’s attendant Ernie Tyler will end his consecutive games streak on Saturday to attend the Hall of Fame Induction of former Orioles-great Cal Ripken Jr., who owns the all-time record for consecutive games played at 2,632.

Tyler, who has worked every Orioles game since Opening Day 1960, was scheduled to leave for Cooperstown, New York, on Saturday morning.

Tyler’s streak ended Saturday at 3,819 games. That included not only regular-season games but also the playoffs, World Series, and All-Star games played in Baltimore – 47 years of service that goes well beyond what his employers could have ever expected of him.

Knowing what I do of Ripken, that may have been the most touching tribute he received all weekend.
