Libby Won’t Go to Prison.

Good job, Mr. President

President Bush today commuted the prison sentence of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Vice President Cheney’s former chief of staff, sparing him the 30-month term to which he was sentenced last month for lying to federal investigators about his role in the White House leak of a CIA officer’s identity.

Bush took the action just hours after a federal appeals court ruled that Libby was not entitled to remain free while he was appealing his conviction on four felonies.

Lewis Libby did not belong in prison. As the President notes, Libby was sentenced based on information that wasn’t allowed in the trial (which, therefore, could not be fairly addressed by the defense) and was tried because of an investigation which should have ended well before Libby was ever interviewed.

On the other hand, Libby was found guilty by a jury and he should face the music for that. Probation and a hefty fine seems appropriate. A quarter of a million dollars is not exactly chump change.

Expect to hear a series of dull thumps as leftists’ heads begin exploding, ripple-fire fashion.
