Mexican Audience Lashes Out in the Only Way they Can

When I read this story, I didn’t get as upset as some did yesterday.

Booed mercilessly at the Miss Universe pageant by a Mexican audience angry at U.S. immigration policy, and seen by millions of TV viewers as she slipped and fell on the pageant stage, Miss USA Rachel Smith nonetheless managed to take the high road and offer her Spanish-speaking hosts an enthusiastic, “Buenas noches Mexico. Muchas gracias!”

Really, this stuff just makes me feel tired anymore. There’s no place an American can go that someone’s not jabbing a finger in our chests or laughing at any slip up. Very little of the anger has any real justification. Certainly Miss Smith deserved none of the churlish treatment she received, nor did the Mexican audience have any legitimate ground to be ticked off at a northern neighbor that has been more generous with its wealth and freedom than any nation in history.

I just can’t find any real anger in myself over this. I don’t blame the audience very much for hooting and jeering. What else are they going to do? It’s not like they can safely take to the streets in their own country to demand that their government be less corrupt and answer to them. After all, their last President made it very clear that the path to prosperity for any Mexican is to break in to the United States. The Mexican government isn’t even really trying to reform itself or bring its people out of misery and poverty. Of course, it blames all its woes on the United States and frames the immigration debate much as supporters of amnesty has: as compassionate and loving people fighting valiantly against racists and isolationists for the sakes of poor immigrants just trying to eke out a living.

So they jeer the person it is safe to jeer, a lovely young woman who has about as much to do with her nation’s generous immigration policies as I do with walking on the moon.

Yeah, it’s frustrating to read about it but what else can they really do?
