Who’ll Start Digging First?

I wonder if we can get a betting line going on whether Congress hits bottom before the President does.

There really does seem to be a plethora of self-inflicted wounds going on in national politics. The President is tenative and seems about as willing to fight back against his critics or the terrorists as an undersized Quaker in a coma. Congress can’t seem to figure out which they want to do first: surrender, give themselves even more perks, or haul various Republicans in front of committees and sneer at them while waving various copies of major newspapers.

We’re all obviously pretty tired of it. And right now, we don’t seem to know what to do with our exasperation. All we seem to be able to agree on is that we’re tired of the war. We want it to stop and we want to live without having to worry about who is going to blow us up with whose bombs. We’re long past that kind of life, at least for the forseeable future, and we all know it deep in our hearts. Congress and the MSM are more than willing to help us believe that fiction though because it’s much better for them if we do. We’ll stop paying attention to Congress all the time and won’t notice just how much of our money is being spent on them rather than where we want it to go. The MSM won’t have to do any really hard work and can go back to celebrity gossip and conjuring up the next yearly crisis.

It’s a shame that we care so little about ourselves that we can’t take the time to learn what our elected officials are really doing and where they really stand. We’d rather gripe and moan about them rather than hunt down a couple good folks, vote them into office, and make sure that they stay good folks by demanding that they do what they’re supposed to do. I wonder how much longer democracy can really work if we keep ignoring it.
