Here are the Moderate Muslims
Often times on this blog I’ve asked where all the Moderate Muslims are.
Well, a whole bunch of them are in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Secular Islam Summit, doing their dead-level best to reclaim their religion from the Islamists who have laid claim to it for decades. Gateway Pundit was there and has plenty of information about the speakers, what they are saying, and what they are risking by coming out publicly against the Islamists. His whole post deserve our attention.
So far as I know, Glenn Beck is the only major media person who is covering this summit at all. He’s given it a lot of time both on his radio show and his CNN Headline News television show. I’ve seen nothing about it on any of the national cable news outlets and the big newspapers don’t seem to be spending any time there at all. That is a shame. This is the sort of things we all should be seeing and we’re not.
UPDATE: Andrew Marcus at Pajamas Media has several interviews with summit participants. At least the blogosphere is paying attention.
UPDATE 2: Brett Stephens of the Wall Street Journal has a must-read article about the summit. His article via Judith Apter Klinghoffer gives us an excellent look at the brave folks who are there working steadfastly toward reform and standing boldly against the murderous Islamists.
Unfortunately, Stephens found that one important entity was not there: the US government. That’s a shocking rebuke to a group of folks we should be helping with every ounce of our strength. It’s a rebuke that I am sure will not be lost on Muslims, especially since al-Jazeera found the time and resources to send reporters while US-funded al-Hurrah did not.
There are times when I wonder just how serious the Bush administration really is about crushing the Islamists. Knowing that our government couldn’t be bothered to send a couple State Department undersecretaries to Florida to put the thinnest veneer of approval on this Summit makes me wonder all the more.

We must accept the fact that moderates everywhere, by their very natures, are non combative and non confrontational. They will never come out in huge groups and protest because they are too busy getting on with real life.

This is something that is better that they conduct on their own. The way the US can help is to keep an eye out for them, keep them safe, and let them lead. Reformation, if any, will come out of the U.S.
