Newt for President. Seriously.
If you want to see what happens when you put someone with ideas and ways to put those ideas into action and a man who is a career politician on the same stage, then you really should watch this debate between Newt Gingrich and Mario Cuomo.
The more I see Gingrich, the more I’m convinced that he is exactly the person we need to be President in 2008. He is blunt, creative, determined, reasoned and reasonable and acts about as differently from the typical politician as you can probably get. He dealt with many of Cuomo’s quite ridiculous assertions (including one that said that if Congress defunded the war in Iraq, the President could still send troops and spend money on them, which is flat-out wrong) with a good amount of grace and wit.
If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, skip through the initial introduction and watch Newt’s 30 minutes. I’d also recommend that you watch some of the Q&A at the end. Skip the first ten minutes because, really, it’s just Cuomo showing us that he really doens’t know a darned thing about geopolitics. The highlight later is Gingrich talking about ways you could reform the Social Security system. It’s worth your time.
