Richard Cohen’s Alternate Reality
Richard Cohen is obviously living on some alternate-reality Earth. Here’s how the world looks from his world.
Now, somebody ought to make a movie about Al Gore. I would call it “An Uncomplaining Life.”
The movie would be about a man who did not quit, who came off the canvas after a painfully close election — he won the popular vote, after all — who accepted defeat graciously and tried to unite the nation, who returned to the consuming passion of his earlier days, the environment, and spoke endlessly on the topic, almost always for free, who starred in a documentary based on his speech and who Sunday night, before a billion or so people, won an Academy Award for his effort. This may or may not be a stepping stone to the presidency, but Gore gives us all a lesson on how to live one’s life.
Uncomplaining. Really? This Al Gore, who in 2004 was still making the same haggard “not every vote was counted” complaint? He certainly wasn’t talking about the Al Gore who came unglued in a speech made at the behest of MoveOn.org in 2004. I’m sure he must have missed the Al Gore that accused the President of repeatedly and “recklessly” violating the law for a surveillance program that was far more restrained with far more oversight than the one that operated under his watch.
And what’s this thing about accepting defeat graciously? Lest we forget, it was Gore who refused to accept defeat and took the Florida vote to the courts for the first time in history. Gore likes to smack-talk about Richard Nixon but at least Nixon was gracious enough to cede the election to Kennedy even though there was a ton of evidence that the Dems had rigged it. It was he who refused to back down even in the slightest until the Supreme Court decided the issue.
It’s also he who, as we’ve seen recently, apparently hasn’t even made a minimal effort to practice what he preaches.
I’m not sure which alternate universe Al Gore Richard Cohen is telling us about, but it’s sure not the one we have on this planet.
