Prince Rocks the House. Twice.
I had been waiting for this video to hit the web.
Prince hosted a press conference before the Super Bowl. He announced that he’d be taking questions and when the first question started, he launched into a mini rock-fest right there in the conference room.
I wonder what knucklehead reporter actually thought he was serious when he showed up on stage accompanied by his entire band. Obviously there was one guy who thought that his slinging his guitar into playing position meant “Yeah, I’m going to take your inane questions”.
Prince’s halftime show was also the highlight of last night’s Super Bowl. The game, quite honestly, stunk. It was a boring affair where neither team every really got to play to the strengths that got them to the big game. The Colts played dink and dunk football, except for one long pass relatively early. The Bears’ defense was mediocre and the loss of Cedric Benson early seemed to get them away from the “run down their throats” game plan they had established early on. The game was billed as a high-octane offense against a hard-nosed defense and, really, neither one showed up.
The vaunted Super Bowl commercials were just pedestrian. I can’t recall one that caught my interest at all, much less made me laugh out loud. I know there were a couple commercials that were made, or at least written, by just regular folks. They weren’t any better than the others and certainly no worse, which kind of says something about the commercial-writing industry these days.
Prince’s halftime throw down really was the best part of the night. Even through a pouring rain, he managed to be funky and musical and entertaining. Tossing in a marching band was a nice touch (and why don’t we see more marching bands at nationally-televised football games?). There was a lot more attention, it seems, on the performance and less on the “show” part of the show. We didn’t get a couple score dancers or a humongous laser light show, or fireworks at the beginning and end of every song. There wasn’t even an opportunity for a “wardrobe malfunction” unless you count his tossing off his headband mid-show as one. There was just a good, solid, toe-tapping halftime show, which was easily the best part of the night.
