John Kerry – Sit Down For This One, Folks – Is Not Running for President
Senator John F. Kerry plans to announce today that he will not run in the 2008 presidential race, and will instead remain in Congress and seek reelection to his Senate seat next year, according to senior Democratic officials.
…who were giving each other high-fives and spraying champagne around the room.
Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, plans to say he will remain in the Senate to recommit himself to efforts to extricate the United States from the war in Iraq.
Because Senators can do that a whole lot easier than the Commander-in-Chief can. We all remember the famous list of Senators who extricated the United States from unpopular wars, don’t we?
There was Senator Cheerleader, Senator What’s Her Face, Senator So-and-So, and The Ugly One…
…no wait. That was the Teen Girl Squad.
But according to Kerry associates, the senator’s plans changed dramatically in the fallout of his election-eve “botched joke” about the education levels of US troops. The harsh reaction to that incident — from many Democrats as well as Republicans — displayed to Kerry the extreme skepticism within his own party about whether he should mount another run.
That and there’s no way his party could credibly defend him considering his history of denigrating our soldiers that goes back to Vietnam. I’m not entirely sure he understands that, but I’d like to think that he does. John Kerry is one of those guys who made his liberal bones a long time ago and has coasted on that success ever since in a state where he’s never really faced a tough election. I suspect that’s given him an inflated sense of himself – well, a more inflated sense of himself. It’s good that he knows when enough is enough.
