Can anyone tell me – seriously – what the attraction is to Barack Obama?
Yeah, okay, he gives a good speech, but when was that unusual? Newt Gingrich gives incredibly substantive and entertaining speeches all the time but I don’t see the MSM flocking to him (okay, because he’s a Republican and he’s Newt). Obama has an interesting background, but it’s certainly no more interesting than any other candidate. We live in the United States, where interesting family backgrounds are a dime a dozen. That’s what happens when you live in the world’s Melting Pot.
So what else is there? He’s opposed to the Iraq War but he’s also a Democrat, so that makes him pretty normal.
He’s been in the US Senate for two whole years. In that time he’s done exactly nothing of note. His big accomplishment in the Indiana State Senate was “working with opponents to resolve policy disagreements and refusing to become a rubber stamp for his allies” and while there he was pretty much the prototypical liberal politician.
So, really, what’s the deal? He’s a US Senator who likes being on camera but can’t seem to get himself behind any legislation or policy initiatives. He’s long on soundbytes and short on putting ideas into action.
So far as I can tell, that puts him pretty much on par with John Kerry. And we remember how well that’s gone for the Dems, don’t we?
CORRECTION: Obama served in the Illinois State Senate, not the one in Indiana. Thanks to Dave Schuler for pointing that out to me. Also, do check out his blog post on the subject. It’s worth your time.

Listen, the cat’s good and all, but he ain’t gonna be our nation’s next president…no way shape or form. Now Gore/Obama 2008–that’s a different story…

That would be the Illinois State Senate, Jimmie.
All is explained about the attraction in one of my recent posts. A lot of folks (mostly white liberals) long for a candidate who can speak authentically across the racial divide. I don’t believe that Barack Obama is that candidate (and neither do a lot of old-line black pols) but a lot of white newspapermen and TV folks do.
