US Invades Iran??

| January 11, 2007 | Comments (4)

Umm….whoa.

US forces have stormed an Iranian consulate in the northern Iraqi town of Irbil and seized six members of staff.

The troops raided the building at about 0300 (0001GMT), taking away computers and papers, according to Kurdish media and senior local officials.

The US military would only confirm the detention of six people around Irbil.

This is a really, really big deal. So far as I know, a consulate is considered sovereign territoty of the nation that runs it. So, basically, our troops invaded Iran, took six people prisoner and confiscated Iranian property.

It is about stinking time.

Iran has been trespassing on sovereign American territory ever since it seized the American Embassy in Tehran in 1979. It’s spent the last few years invading Iraq on a daily basis and killing Iraqis. So turnabout, I think, is more than fair play.

After all, we are at war. I sincerely hope this is not the last time we do this. I’d think there are many more Iranian consulates that could be raided right this very minute. Who knows what we may find there?

An embassy is, indeed, an extraterritorial extension of a sovereign state, but a consulate may or may not be–it depends on the agreement between the host state and the represented state. In this case, between Iraq and Iran. The consulate normally doesn't have diplomatic immunity, either.

Its purpose is sort of to act as a branch office, looking out for Iranian citizens and businesses operating in Irbil.

Thanks for that EricH…I didn't have much of a chance to look up the specifics.
