So What Was President Bush Doing When Saddam Hung?

He was asleep.

According to the report I just heard on Fox News, he was told by NSA Stephen Hadley earlier in the day that Saddam would be executed by ten and left word to wake him if anything went wrong.

Meaning that when the door opened under Hussein, Bush was already asleep, since he normally goes to bed by ten unless something unusual keeps him up.

I rather like the image of the leader off the free world sleeping restfully while a brutal tyrant he was instrumental in deposing met an ignominious end, don’t you? It seems fitting that the President did not stay awake waiting for the word that Hussein was dead. The man’s fate was in the hands of the people the President had helped to free and it seems his faith that their system would work as it should was well-placed.

Let us hope that this happens far more often. There are plenty more tyrants out there whose executions George W. Bush should be sleeping through.

Here’s the President’s statement, written, obviously, even before it happened. I like it. It is subdued and matter-of-fact. No reason for him to give much regard to Saddam in death. In the end, he was just another criminal who could not escape justice.
